In an industry traditionally occupied by men, Viya Huang is one of many females taking on the career path as a Specialist access technician.

A somewhat unknown industry to the majority of the world, Viya was introduced to the prospect of utilising her love for climbing into a full-time job through her rock climbing friends. Having been an avid climber for many years the notion to turn a passion into a career was a no-brainer. A little over 8 months ago with nothing to lose, Viya completed her Level 1 Rope Access Ticket and looked to get started in the world of Hire Rise Window Cleaning.
What many technicians quickly find out is that although there is an abundance of work, the majority of companies in the industry are looking for experienced technicians ready to keep pace in a demanding role. Whilst getting your rope access ticket gives you the competencies to safely work in the industry, 5 days is obviously not a lot of time to learn the intricate details required to perform to your best abilities whilst abseiling often 200m above the city below. “We started the academy to ultimately help generate more experienced and qualified Rope Access Technicians working for not only Sky5 but the industry. We want to be known as a recognised authority for upskilling and teaching technical skills."

"The Sky5 Academy was started out of necessity, the demand for Professional Rope Access Technicians continues to climb daily” Mark Knight Managing Director of Sky5 Stated.

During her Traineeship, Viya worked alongside some of our most professional & skilled site supervisors, giving her the confidence and training that only comes with years of experience. Having someone mentoring you the first time you abseil the 228m MLC building in Sydney is obviously an invaluable part of anyone’s training.
The academy is the perfect place for new recruits to start as it gives them the freedom to learn, whilst being partnered with highly skilled and knowledgeable technicians, without the pressures of having to keep up with teams that have been in the industry for years, said Laurance Carr, Operations Manager of the Window cleaning team. Having completed the traineeship in under 2 months, Viya has been promoted to technician, where she will now hone her craft and skill set as she looks to further her career in the world of Specialist Access. Congratulations Viya
